History and description
The mound known as Tepe Qōrōq lies in the plain Farāhān, about 2 km east of the village of Tabarteh. Tepe Qōrōq is a roughly conical, steep-sides mound, 80x70 m, with an approximate height of 10 m above the surrounding plain. The perimeter of the mound has been reduced by farming activities. Scattered potsherds on the surface of the mound fall into two major groups: plain red pottery and painted buff ware. The mound seems to be occupied as early as the Bronze Age with top layers containing remains of an Islamic building.
Archaeological Exploration
Tepe Qōrōq was first recorded by Khosrow Pourbakhshandeh in a survey conducted on behalf of the Iranian Center for Archaeological Research in 1997. Then, it was re-visited and mapped by a group of archaeologists from the local branch of the Iranian Cultural Heritage Organization and Tourism based in Arak in the 1990s.
