History and description

Tepe Ma’mūrin was originally an extensive site in the vicinity of the abandoned village of Ma’mūrin in the plain of Robat Karim. The archaeological site covers some 12 hectares and is about 5 m high. The first season of excavations saw the introduction of test soundings in different parts of the site which revealed architectural remains with Grey Ware ceramics of Iron Age date. According to the excavator's report, two subsequent seasons, in 1991 and 1995, revealed three occupation levels associated with mud-brick structures with rectangular plans; these units were apparently in use for a long period of time in that the plastered floors were renewed several times. As for the pottery, it seems that, according to the brief reports of the excavator, most of the ceramics found in these building levels are representative of typical Gray Ware of the early Iron Age date. However, in the absence of reliable documents
