Medieval city of Ojān

Medieval city of Ojān

Recent excavations revealed remains of the medieval city of Ojān in northwestern Iran. Founded in the 11th century under the Seljuqs of Persia, Ojān became the summer capital of the Ilkhāns of Persia in the 12th and 13th centuries. Only a small part of this 1-hectare site has so far been explored. The most important archeological findings consist of typical glazed pottery of the Saljuq-Ilkhanid period, copper coins, and structures in burnt brick and rubble masonry. The Iranian archaeological team from Tehran University uncovered parts of the city wall with its semi-circular towers and the central area of the citadel, including a columned hall. A nearby cemetery related to the same period was also explored.
